  • 1.5 cups basmati rice
  • 2 ghee
  • 1 chili
  • 2.5 cups water
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 2 teaspoons cumin seeds
  • 1 leaf
  • 4 cardamoms
  • 2 piece

  1. Preparation Wash rice a few times until water runs clear

  2. Then soak it in lot of water for at least 30 mins

  3. Drain it completely

  4. How to make jeera rice Heat ghee or oil in a pressure cooker or a pot

  5. Saute bay leaf, cloves, cinnamon, cardamoms and mace until they begin to sizzle

  6. Fry jeera on a low flame until a nice aroma comes out

  7. Add green chilli

  8. Transfer drained rice to the pot or cooker and fry for 2 to 3 mins

  9. Do not stir vigorously as the rice grains will break

  10. This frying step helps to bring out the aroma of the rice

  11. Pour water and add salt

  12. Stir well and taste the water

  13. It must be slightly salty

  14. Bring water to a boil on a high flame

  15. Making Jeera rice in pot – Cover and cook on a low to medium heat until water is absorbed & rice is done

  16. Once done, turn off the heat and let the rice rest in the pot for 15 mins

  17. This helps the grains to expand and become fluffy

  18. Making Jeera rice in pressure cooker – Cover the pressure cooker with a lid

  19. Cook on a high heat for 1 whistle

  20. For al dente rice, I release the pressure carefully after 2 mins with the help of a wooden spatula

  21. When the pressure releases completely, open the lid and fluff up jeera rice with a fork

  22. Serve with any curry

  23. Instant pot Jeera rice Press saute button and pour ghee to the inner pot of instant pot

  24. Add all the spices & saute for 1 min until they turn fragrant

  25. Add the drained rice and chilli

  26. Saute for 2 mins stirring occasionally

  27. Do not stir a lot, rice grains will break

  28. Pour 1¾ cups plus 2 tbsps water and add salt

  29. Stir and taste the water

  30. If needed add more salt

  31. Secure the lid & position the steam release handle to sealing

  32. Press the pressure cook button, set to high pressure

  33. Set the timer for 5 mins

  34. When done the instant pot beeps, press cancel

  35. Allow the pressure to release naturally for at least 5 mins

  36. Manually release the rest of the pressure with the help of a wooden spoon

  37. For aldente rice, release the pressure immediately

  38. Fluff up the Jeera rice with a fork & add some coriander leaves
